Building Our House On The Rock

The first time writing scriptures into the frames of a construction was introduced to me was when my church, Mt. Airy Baptist added the Life Center several years ago. We had a beautiful party where all the members came out and bathed the beams, floors, and walls in scriptures. Then we prayed over the building and how God would bless many and that we may serve God well with this structure He allowed our church.

Since then, I've known two other couples who did this with their precious "forever" homes. It is not done to be trendy or to fall into a fad. To do this is to ask God to be all over your home. To give it back to Him. To ask Him to protect, provide, and to bless your home. To choose to bless others with the walls He provided. To write His promises to cling to and thrive in. To bury Him in our walls and our hearts. To let this home be a success in Christ Jesus. A happy home. A safe home. A home where God dwells. A home that knows God is our provider in all things.

Underneath our crawl-space  I buried a bible. I had gotten this idea from our previous neighbor at the home we recently sold. They too, were in the process of building their "forever" home and they had a bible laid into their slab. Since we did a crawl space, I decided to bury it under there in some good old red clay. To literally build our house upon the Rock. I did not have my gardening spade or anything much to dig with because I packed everything up and only unpacked the bare necessities in this time of renting in between homes. So, I took my hammer and used the back to dig! Haha! My husband was laughing too hard at the sight of me crawling underneath the space in his hard hat from work (Michigan Wolverines themed) a bible, and a hammer and going to town on the clay. We are already making memories in the house and I love this.

And on our floors and walls we wrote as a family many scriptures, promises that we claimed, and reminders of living Holy and blameless lives. Reminders of Who meets our needs. Reminders of fruits of the Spirit. Reminders of matrimonious (I made that word up) and romantic love between Eric and I. Reminders for Ellie as she grows into a woman and faces all the challenges of life in her own way. God is our rock, fortress, example of love, provider, peace giver, protector, friend, and Father. The scriptures we wanted to write are also printed on paper to be kept in our family notebook. I have also taken a few pictures of some of them.

We originally wanted to have a handful of family and close God loving friends over to do this with us. Ultimately, we decided to just make this a Three E's thing. However, God provided us with precious people in our lives so we sought still their help in providing some scripture. What a blessing. Thank you, friends, who contributed to our home in this way. I could not imagine a better housewarming gift.

I also intended for us to pray together over the home once we finished, however, Ellie was past her bed time and feeling it. But we will pray over it every day as always giving thanks to God and asking special requests over our lives there. We will pray on site when we return, which will be very soon as we are too excited to stay away! Haha!

Here are some shots of what it looked like:

My Sister

My sister is something else. Really. I've never met anybody else on earth quite like her. She is weird and ridiculous and makes me laugh. We have almost always been close. Growing up we were so super close. She used to rough up kids who picked on me or wouldn't let me play with the toys I wanted while I was in pre-school and she was in K-5. She protected me and also acted like a mommy to me. Meaning, she spanked me when she thought I deserved it....and I thought she was allowed because I was too naive to know any better. That also means she took care of me. If I needed my milk poured, she poured it. If I needed homework help, she helped. Please note....these things continued up until the time she left home for college. Yes. She was pouring milk for me for a total of 15 years. She spoiled me rotten. She also kept me out of trouble by getting on to me before I ventured off into the trouble I was planning. She kept me innocent. She kept me guarded. She read scriptures to me when I went to bed. She read me scriptures to soothe my hurting heart and help me behave kindly when drama with dumb girls happened. She sacrificed so much for me and still does. She has always put me ahead of herself.

She has made me angrier than almost anybody else could. She has scared the snot out of me. She has annoyed me. She has made me cry.

But that is all normal. I've surely hurt her more.

My sister has been one of my biggest cheerleaders all of my life. She has encouraged me in my running, my faith, my relationships, marriage, motherhood, basketball, schooling, she has made everything that is important to me one of her top priorities.

I have many happy memories with my sister. So so so many wonderful memories from as far back as possible to remember. And then, home videos help me to witness how good she has always been to me beyond my memory. Videos have evidenced me crawling as a little baby to my sister who was set up in the hallway of my first home as a Clardy, playing and listening to tape recording stories. A ranch home in Williamston. I crawled up to her and kept attempting to mess with and eat and chew and ruin everything she was playing with. And she...being like 4 years old, responded like such a mature big girl so lovingly. She simply sweetly sang her stories to me and sweetly moved her items from my reach, yet still included me. If that had been me I am sure I would have pitched a tantrum. She is rare and her love for me is unreal. I have grown up pulling her hair, pinching her, slapping her, and attempting to beat her up. (Because we are siblings and we fight, ok?) I was always physical and she was always verbal. The girl is an ox and I am a twig, easily broken. However, in all of my 27.5 years, she has only ever retaliated once. She has only ever hit me one time in all my life. And she warned me she was going to do it. So I pushed her buttons because I knew she wouldn't. Becasue I was an annoying younger sibling. She did. She knocked me out to the floor. I cried. She cried harder because she hated herself for doing it even though I annoyingly provoked it.

Many times she has understood me better than most anyone. She knows how to be gentle and patient with me. She knows how to listen to me and really hear me. She knows all of the things that are important to my heart and she invests in them. She has such grace with me it is just shy of Jesus. (Because His grace is perfect). Even after she became a mom for the first time, she treated me still with a maternal love and grace. She cuddled me in bed and listened to all of my dreams for my life. She let me show her what I was planning, creating, desiring, dreaming up on Pinterest. She made all of my desires seem so cool and achievable.

She knew I was in love with Eric before I ever even told her he existed.

She has helped me be a better me, even though I always resist her advice initially.

She and I are 100% different. Our physical builds, mental builds, fears, emotions, skills, interests....all completely different. I have no filter and she holds too much in. Where I am weak, she is strong...and vice versa. We make a solid team when we pull together. She lets me be a feisty spit ball who acts likes a tough cookie (even though I am not). She has endured so much from me but she really has helped to mold and shape me into the person I am.

For example. Kelsey was my entire childhood. All of my best memories revolve around my sister. She created all the games we played together. She is so creative in a way I am not. She is not crafty, but she is imaginative. You could never ever be bored with her. If you are her friend, and you are bored....you are cray and you aren't encouraging her to be her best self because she is hilarious and kind of stupid funny and really fun. She would teach me fun little school lessons. She would actually plan an entire lesson for me including videos, worksheets, coloring pages, games, and an activity. What is really cool is she actually taught me things I still remember to this day and she instilled in me one of my greatest loves which is dinosaurs. I think dinosaurs are so cool. I cannot wait to ask God about them one day. You know that is probably something I won't care about once I am in His visible presence....but....I currently want to ask God all about the dinosaurs and scriptures. My sister and Jurassic Park on the daily basis at my babysitter's house in K-5 gave me that love and passion.

She played dress up with me and we sang songs and put on productions with a record player. We made cookies and snacks together and tried nasty concoctions of food, together. We ate all the "Gogurt" in Anderson county as kids trying to win a trip they were promoting. She taught me to make snow forts, climb, race, create, be silly, and to be who God created me to be. I believe I have been able to use all the lessons she gave me as a child through love, play, and her own love of education to also help her in adulthood to appreciate the wonderful person she is. She is too kind and too gentle and too good. She deserves the world. I am hard and she is soft. She will forgive and forgive and I am not as willing. We balance each other and help to find the middle ground. She is care free and I am uptight as can be. I worry and she laughs. I don't care about people's opinions and she lives to please. We are both bubbly and bright and smiley. I hate to be mushy with her but she loves it so much her hugs hurt me they are so big and tight. I need her love and her interest but don't like to tell her that. I don't think she reads my blog so I can be mushy all I want here. I really love my sister. I love who she is even when it annoys me and I want to smack her upside the head. I am so thankful she loves me no matter how much rougher around the edges I am and not quite like her. I need her to love me and want to cheer me on. Without that love and support of my sister, I am missing something I have relied on all of my life.

And goodness gracious motherhood. Forget about it. Ellie has an amazing family surrounding her. Eric and I both know we are excellent parents but we also know we need help and guidance from those we love and trust best when some things are new and beyond us. And good parenting is also being able to admit when you need to ask for help! Ellie's Aunt Keka has taught me almost everything I know. Everything that has been successful with Ellie such as good sleeper, advanced movement, and good eater....all this comes from the lessons Kelsey has given me at all hours of the night. At this point we now have a phone code. If I call once, it is to chat. If I call more than once back to back and she doesn't answer, she better drop everything and call me back because Mama Emmay is about to lose her ever loving mind as to what to do for Ellie. She left church service one night to calm me, teach me, and encourage me about baby led weaning with Ellie. She was meant to be a nurturing mother. She has been doing that since she was 3 years old. She told everybody that I was HER baby.  She has given Ellie 75% of her belongings. She taught me how to bathe Ellie. Kelsey is not just a parent to her 4 children, she is my third parent; I am her 5th child (but really her 1st). I was born really with 3 parents. Only... one of them I got to get into trouble with and beat up.

Her lack of caring about a perfectly clean house makes my skin crawl and scream. She, as an adult....has still managed to damage my belongings with her nail polish. UGH!!! Why is she so not careful with makeup, grease, and crumbs?! She spills EVERYTHING!!! I used to clean her house when I lived with her on weekends in Lexington.  It grates my nerves. My uptightness grates hers. I could count on like one hand all the times my sister has actually ever gotten upset with me. My uptightness and overseeing really drives her crazy. As it would anybody. These are things that will never change. Our future Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings once my parents are too old to want to host are going to be something else. We cooked dinner together once. She was pregnant with the twins. She was in my kitchen. She made me be sleep deprived to cook all night long. She cooks way too much food. Like. seriously. All you need is mac and cheese, rolls, and a little meat. And an apple pie. She makes like a bajillion different dishes because she is too sweet and wants to please every single person in this very large family of ours. I respect it but mercy alive it is just too much. I am sure we will rally together in the end. We know how each other ticks. I am thankful that I get to have her in my life forever to be the one who annoys the ever loving goodness right out of me in the kitchen and bathroom.

I did get a little mushy with her the other night because she is just seriously incredible and she selflessly helped me do life again, more importantly, she helped me, help Ellie to feel better from teething. And I told her, I was so thankful knowing she was my family to grow old with once mama and Daddy are gone. Knowing we have each other for love and support always is truly a blessing. I have never thought of her so sentimentally before but she really is a treasure. It would be awful to be left by your parents one day with nobody to lean on. I know she will outlive me because I can't seem to live without her as it is.

Anyway. I am also thankful for her beautiful children I get to call my nieces and nephews. It is insanely important to me to be close to them and for them to really love and know me as an aunt and friend. An Aunt they see more than once a year. An aunt who they know also loves them and wants to have their interests, dreams, and desires at her heart. An aunt who is present in their lives and truly knows who they are. I want Ellie to be their sibling more than their cousin. We will likely never give Ellie a sibling so her cousins are incredibly important for her to lean on and know closely. To fight with and care for. So they may grow old together with love and support. I want the Jones and Gladden clan to be strong. I'll never stop giving Kelsey a hard time because she needs it. She is too good and she needs a feather ruffler in her life. That's me. I like to ruffle feathers.

I will close by saying this....No blog could ever be enough space to write about the goodness and blessing my sister is to me. No blog could ever hold the love we have for each other or the good times we have created and will continue creating. I am truly blessed with a wonderful sister. I love her and I am so so so grateful for her. Even when I want to slap her. So, if you have a sibling, no matter how different you may be, show them you love them always and forever.

Happy National Sibling's Day (yesterday) to my overly mushy sister who is never on social media and will likely never see this blog. I love you.

Love,
You Darling Salt Crystal

Teething Terror Yet Happy Tears

Matthew 25:23 says, "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'

In the darkness of the nursery, the Holy Spirit spoke this passage into my heart to bring me peace and one huge blessing amidst what could have been a terrible mildly tormentuous time.

9 p.m.- Eric and I head to bed to rest our bodies for a very busy week ahead for all.

9 p.m.- wails, screeches, hysterical screams and crying from the nursery.

"What on earth?!"

Ellie has slept peacefully all night long every night in her crib since she was 4 weeks old. However, now she is encountering so many changes. I thought at first maybe she had a night terror. I let her cry it out after checking on her and seeing all things that could be wrong appeared to be good. But, 15 minutes later Ellie was still in hysterics and my mommy alarms and instincts were tingling. Something is up. But what!? So I went in her room and held her in the dark until she was completely calm. She refused violently, any milk. I did a diaper change and a tummy and leg massage with her lotion and held her until she was so happy, she was talking to the lit up stars and moon on her ceiling, projected from her night light. Seeming ok, I laid her back down. Only to throw back into hysterics. This all continued for another hour. I finally, about to panic as I was not sure what was actually wrong, texted my sister. My go to in all things Ellie. After some back and forth of details she was certain Ellie was in much pain from teething. So, to the nursery I returned.

Here is where it got awesome. I grabbed the 8 oz bottle I had previously made and entered the nursery. Little Flicker instantly stopped screaming and told me, "Hey!" I told her it was all ok, Mommy is here! I picked her up and held her and whispered to her while rubbing her fuzzy head until her body calmed down from tears, and frazzledness. Then, I gave her the Tylenol and proceeded to cradle her and rock her in the glider for the next 30 minutes. I just sat there, holding her, rubbing her little head and cheek. I began to cry. I was not crying out of a let down of frustration or anxiety. No. I was actually crying overwhelmingly joyful tears. I sat there in the darkness by the dim light of her little elephant light, feeling the very flesh that God allowed to be part of my own flesh, and even more preciously, part of my husband's own flesh, flesh I grew by God's miraculous grace. I felt her soft cheek and soft fuzzy hair on my fingertips. I felt her calmed heart beating on my other hand. I heard her soft and slowed breathing. God made me and allowed me the greatest honor and blessing of being this little girl's mommy. I am her mommy!!! That is so incredible to me. I am the one who gets to be blessed with these moments of getting to soothe her wary heart. I am the one who gets to comfort her and make it better. God allowed me this responsibility and I just can't see how I deserve this very precious gift that is Ellie.

As I sat there quietly crying in awe of God and in awe of her.... Ellie, as if moved by God Himself, then turned to me and I swear, spoke to me through her eyes. Do you moms know what I mean?? In this very dark room, these little eyes looked at me, these little hands grabbed my face so lovingly and softly, and I knew with everything in me that she was telling me, God was allowing me to know, that she loves me. She is thankful for me. That I am her mommy and she is so happy for that. She looked at me and her eyes told me she loves me. God spoke Ellie's heart to me tonight through Ellie's eyes. Call me crazy but it is truly true. The screaming and wailing, the pain she must be in, clearly, is and was terrible, all I wanted was to go to sleep, and because I patiently and lovingly did what mommies do, because I love my Ellie more than my own life, God allowed me to be rewarded with her love.

"His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'

God put me in charge of Ellie. I am a faithful (at least I try to be!) servant to God, primarily. I am a servant to my husband, secondarily. (I can serve my husband and still be an equal, respected, valued and loved partner, for those who cringe at women who live to serve, help, and submit to their husbands as God calls us) and third, I am a servant to my beautiful daughter, Ellie. And while I was so ready to sleep and I was truthfully initially annoyed at her crying ...because, "why are you crying!?", I buried myself and rose to her demands and God rewarded that with showing me Ellie's love and appreciation. God allowed me to see how I was able to help Ellie feel better. God rewarded me in the most precious and meaningful way, ever. God brought me to happy tears in the middle of terrible teething.

Sweet Potato, Spinach, Onion, and Mushroom Quiche

I made this a few months ago and loved it. So, I made it again. As with recipies, I hate to read an intro, I just want to know what I am doing. So, here it is. Enjoy!

Finished Quiche

*One large sweet potato
*8 (ish) eggs (I kept adding until it looked like it would fill my baking dish)
*Fresh chopped mushrooms
*Spinach
*One large purple onion
*Minced Garlic
*Olive oil or coconut oil...whichever healthy oil is your preference
----I don't usually measure anything...I eyeball...So sorry for no exact amounts. It's really up to your preferences.----

Spices:

*Chili Powder
*Ground black pepper

Instructions:

*Preheat oven to 425 deg. F.
*Chop onion and place in a pan. Add garlic. Using a drizzle of your oil, Sautee the onion until mildly cooked.
*While the onion and garlic are sauteeing, in a large mixing bowl, crack in your eggs, add your mushrooms, spinach, and pepper.
*Once onion/garlic are sauteed well, pour into egg mixture. Set aside.
*Slice into thick potato chip style slices your sweet potato.
*Use your oil to "grease" your casserole dish
*Line an 8x8 ish casserole dish with the sweet potato slices in the form of a crust. Bottom of dish, and up the sides.
* Sprinkle chili powder over sweet potatoes
*Pour egg mixture over sweet potatoes evenly
*Bake in oven at 425F for 45 minutes or until eggs are thoroughly cooked and potatoes are soft.

This recipe can be altered of course in any way that suits your desires. Add veggies, switch it up. The point of this recipe is its healthfulness and delicious way of incorporating protein and veggies. Voila!  Bon Appetit!

Ellie's Easter

I wrote a good bit in Ellie's 8 month blog about her Easter activities leading up to Easter. But I also wanted to document her actual Easter holiday!

I was so thankful to be able to share truth of Life with Ellie. To explain why we celebrate Easter. To explain love greater than Mommy's and Daddy's to her. Praising Jesus with Ellie is such an incredible way to grow in the Lord and truly realize Hid goodness in ALL things and in ALL times!

Eric and I combined our traditions for Easter when we first started dating. It was so fun to share these with Ellie for her first Easter! The Easter Bunny came to our rental and hid many eggs for Ellie, Mommy, and Daddy! He also filled everyone a basket full of goodies and hid them. On Easter morning, Ellie woke up and came downstairs with Daddy to start the hunt of her eggs and basket! She immediately found a few eggs, but got caught up on teething on one. Once she got going again, it was not long before she discovered an egg, AND her basket behind the couch!!

The Easter Bunny left Ellie bubbles, race cars, princess dress up accessories, books, and a stuffed rabbit she has named, "Ah-choo." Seriously. It's what she keeps calling him. The sweetest thing she did was to see the bunny and kiss him sweetly on his little nose.

We went to our church, Mt. Airy Baptist Church and Ellie's Mimi and G-Daddy joined. They have gotten to be with each of their grandbabies at church for their first Easter. Ellie, who does not go to nursery at this time because of her nap/food schedule and a Type A mommy with a good case of "First Time Mom Syndrome", danced, and drank a bottle through worship in Mimi's arms. Then, Keith started preaching and Ellie was not in the mood to sit down. So I took her upstairs in the LC to crawl around and I was still able to listen.
** Can I just take a second to mention how thankful I am to be part of a church family that loves my family and allows me to do this with Ellie even though there is a perfectly good nursery provided? She ate a muffin in the middle of service the week before and I sat on the floor while she picked it apart in my hand. I love my church family and that we can be real people living real lives and dealing with our children in a way that brings us as parents peace of mind while still being able to be fed spiritually ourselves. Thank you, Mt. Airy family for letting us do what we gotta do and loving us through it!

Ellie got to witness two beautiful outdoor baptisms which was incredible. I always love the faces of the people as they raise from death to life in eternity with Jesus through the water baptism. You can see the joy of Jesus and His Spirit overwhelm them as they have chosen to have a relationship like no other with the one true Savior!

Ellie wore a beautiful dress her Nana and Papa Rollie picked out for her at Christmas. Blue satin bodice with a matching bow at the waist line. The skirt was tulle over white satin and covered with blue, silver, and white glittery dots. She loved playing with that skirt!

After church, we went to Mimi and G-Daddy's house for a good home cooked Easter dinner with my two grandmothers and cousin, Johnny. Ellie ate tomato, green beans, cantaloupe, yogurt, and cheese. She played, and took a nap in my old bedroom. A special and wonderful day!

The Aftermath: "Matters of the Heart" - Post Procedure & Other Big Life Events

Let's just start with this, my recovery has not  been as expected.  September 10, I had a transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement. I...
