Hagood Mill Historic Site, Pickens, SC

I have known about Hagood for several years now. I follow them on social media. I pass by there ALL the time to go hiking. I have never however, made it out there! Finally, by invitation of a sweet friend to join her and her precious son, I got to go!

Hagood Mill is located in Pickens. They are open Wednesday - Saturday, 10a.m. to 4 p.m. Their address is 138 Hagood Mill Rd., Pickens, SC 29671.

Hagood Mill is not only gorgeous and located in the quiet hillside, it is a deeply cultural, historical, and fantastic place.

You can tour for free (though donations are accepted). They have the Grist Mill, of course, the moon shine distillery, cotton gin, cabins, an entertainment for the public cabin stage, and a Mercantile. there is a field for disc golf, a nature walk along a creek, and a water wheel. There is also a petroglyph site with impressive show and lights to show you what that's all about. There is an archeology dig station for the kids. This place is perfect for all ages and the entire family.

They host frequent events and offer blacksmith classes. Upcoming are classes to make your own Christmas ornaments in the Blacksmith shop and they look so awesome! Go to their website, here, to see the class availability and sign up. I know my oldest nephew would be all about it. Heck! I want to do it! There is also Spoon Carving class!

They have fiddling performances, blue grass, fairs, and craftsman/artisan fairs, stone ground grits, demonstrations, and "every third Saturday's" events (which would be a small fee).

For schools and homeschool groups, they offer field trips which look very well organized and I cannot wait to take Ellie for more detailed field trips when she is older.

We arrived at 10 a.m. and walked into the Mercantile to grab a map. The map was very detailed as the different sites were numbered, then the number correlated to a description on the map. We walked around taking our time with our friends exploring and reading, discussing, and playing. You can really spend a lot of time here if you want to absorb it all. We stayed 3.5 hours and could have easily stayed longer specifically at the Native American artifacts and Petroglyph site. Ellie enjoyed it all. She asked to go through everything twice and so we did! The nature trail is only 3/4 of a mile and along a creek. We paused to sit on the creek bank, dig in the sand, and dip our toes in the creek. The history there is so well explained and the bridge and old road that used to carry one from Pickens to NC was so cool to see. The bridge was fascinating. I love an old bridge and the history welded within it.

Go check it out whether it be a Wednesday morning with your little one for a quiet stroll beside the chickens and the vegetable garden, or on a hoppin' Saturday for some fiddlin', or a blacksmith class to make Christmas ornaments. Get your tail out there because it is an Upstate treasure!

Heart Surgery - Update 2

Time truly is an odd thing. Our time on Earth is short, even if we manage to live 100+ years. We can hardly fathom eternity and the length...
